2016 AHSNH Award Winners Announced

AHSNH Award winners were announced during the Annual Meeting of the Association of Historical Societies of New Hampshire, held at the Hopkinton Historical Society on October 22, 2016. The Association's awards committee considered organizations nominated for their excellence at preserving, interpreting, and/or promoting an appreciation for and understanding of an aspect of New Hampshire history. Jennifer Carroll of the Historical Society of Cheshire County, who is also an Association officer, presented the awards on behalf of the Association.

The Madison Historical Society received the first award for their exhibit "Wedding Dresses Through the Ages," inspired by Linda Lovering's offer of wedding dress for display at the Society. Expanding their vision beyond this initial inspiration, the Madison Historical Society created an exhibit and accompanying web-based catalog that featured thirty wedding dresses and other wedding accessories and memorabilia, broadening the discussion of wedding dresses to fashion and beyond. This award for public education and public programs was accepted on behalf of the Madison Historical Society by Linda Smith.

The Newport Historical Society received two awards from the Association for the publication of Jayna Huot Hooper's book Billy B. Van, Newport's Sunshine Peddler. The book, a biography of the popular entertainer and Newport resident, inspired interest and additional research into Van's life and accomplishments that will culminate in an exhibit and filmography. For these accomplishments, Cathryn Baird accepted both the research and documentation award and the public education and public program award on behalf of the Newport Historical Society . Special mention was made of the author, who was prevented from attending by a family illness.

As part of the Association's mission to encourage and assist others in the study, preservation, and understanding of New Hampshire’s history, the directors and members of the Association are pleased to recognize this outstanding work.
